Naruto Live-Action Film Launches Worldwide Casting Search for Three Main Leads
Lionsgate has opened a global casting search for Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura in its upcoming live-action Naruto film directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, with creator Masashi Kishimoto directly involved in the production.

Lionsgate has launched a worldwide casting call for the three leads of its live-action Naruto film. The search seeks actors to portray Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, and Sakura Haruno - the iconic Team 7 at the heart of Masashi Kishimoto's legendary manga franchise.
A-List Creative Team Behind the Project
Destin Daniel Cretton, best known for directing Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is helming the adaptation. Cretton is also producing through his company Hisako alongside Jeyun Munford. The producing team is rounded out by Avi Arad, Ari Arad, and Emmy Yu of Arad Productions, as well as Jeremy Latcham. Tasha Huo, whose credits include Red Sonja and the Tomb Raider animated series, is writing the screenplay.
Cretton expressed his deep connection to the source material in a statement accompanying the announcement. "Kishimoto-sensei's stories have inspired generations of fans around the world, and it's an honor to bring his world and characters to the big screen in live action for the very first time," the director said.
Kishimoto Directly Involved
Perhaps the most significant detail for fans is that original creator Masashi Kishimoto is directly involved in the production. His participation signals a commitment to honoring the source material - something that has historically been a sticking point for anime-to-live-action adaptations.
Kishimoto shared his own excitement about the project, acknowledging the unlikely path that brought the film to this stage. "If so many miracles have already come together, then let us hope for even more," the creator said, expressing hope that the casting process will identify performers capable of authentically embodying his characters.
What the Casting Call Covers
The initial phase of the global casting search focuses exclusively on Team 7's three core members. Naruto Uzumaki, the determined and spirited ninja who dreams of becoming Hokage, headlines the search alongside his rival Sasuke Uchiha and their teammate Sakura Haruno. Casting for additional characters from the sprawling Naruto universe will follow in subsequent phases.
The decision to open the search globally rather than limiting it to Hollywood's existing talent pool reflects both the international reach of the franchise and a deliberate effort to find the right fits for these beloved characters. Naruto remains one of the best-selling manga series of all time, with over 250 million copies in circulation worldwide, and any casting decisions will face intense scrutiny from the franchise's passionate global fanbase.
The Road Ahead
The casting call, announced on July 11, 2026, marks the most concrete step yet in bringing Naruto to live action. The project has been in various stages of development for years, but the combination of a proven director in Cretton, an experienced producing team through Arad Productions, and Kishimoto's direct creative involvement positions this adaptation more seriously than previous attempts.
No production start date or release window has been announced. With the casting search now underway for the three leads, additional details about the film's scope, shooting locations, and timeline are expected to emerge as the production moves forward. Naruto is currently available to stream on Crunchyroll, with the complete anime series and Naruto Shippuden accessible for fans looking to revisit the source material ahead of the film's eventual arrival.
