Bandai Namco Filmworks unveiled full production details for Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO at San Diego Comic-Con International in July 2026. The anime, set in an entirely new Gundam universe, will be directed by Kenji Kamiyama at studio SOLA ANIMATION and is slated for a 2027 premiere.

A New Universe Built From Scratch

Gundam RG XARX-ZERO breaks away from every existing Gundam timeline. Its premise centers on an Autonomous Interstellar Object that arrives in Earth's solar system bearing three revolutionary technologies: Gravity Control, Faster-Than-Light Communication, and Cognitive Materialization. Within a decade of first contact, the object turns hostile, spawning an aggressive alien ecosystem that pushes humanity to the brink.

After a desperate orbital standoff, humanity is forced to abandon Earth entirely. That catastrophic exodus is designated A.A. 1 - After Apocalypse. By A.A. 45, an entire generation of children born in space has never known peace or solid ground beneath their feet.

Ray Azumi Takes the Controls

Takeo Otsuka voices protagonist Ray Azumi, a war orphan who lost his parents in an attack by the hostile alien force known as the Apocalypse. Described as the permanently assigned pilot of the Gundam Zero, Ray awakens on the lunar surface 45 years after humanity's exile from Earth. His journey forms the narrative spine of the series as he confronts both the alien threat and the fractured remnants of human civilization.

Kamiyama Leads a Stacked Production Team

Kenji Kamiyama - best known for directing Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - serves as both director and series scriptwriter. The rest of the creative roster is equally notable. Eiichi Shimizu handles Gundam unit designs, while STATO provides original character designs. Miyako Takasu serves as animation character designer and chief animation director, and composer Go Shiina scores the series.

On the production side, Joseph Chou and Yasufumi Kobashi are attached as producers. Acclaimed novelist and essayist Toh Enjoe contributes to world-building, lending a literary dimension to the show's ambitious sci-fi setting.

Part of the Larger RG Project

Gundam RG XARX-ZERO is not a standalone venture. It sits within the broader RG Project multimedia initiative. The connected video game Gundam Rogue Orbit takes place 90 years after the events of the anime, expanding the newly minted timeline far beyond what the series itself will cover. The RG Project signals Bandai Namco's intent to build out this fresh continuity across multiple media formats simultaneously.

What Comes Next

With a 2027 premiere window confirmed and a veteran creative team locked in, Gundam RG XARX-ZERO represents one of the most ambitious new entries in the franchise's 45-plus-year history. Kamiyama's track record with sci-fi worldbuilding, combined with an entirely original Gundam universe and a cross-media rollout plan, positions the project as a major tentpole for Bandai Namco Filmworks heading into next year. Additional cast, a specific premiere date, and streaming distribution details are expected in the months ahead.
