Netflix will stream Gintama the Movie 2026: Yoshiwara in Flames on August 27, giving global audiences access to the compilation film that originally debuted in Japanese theaters on February 13. Directed by Naoya Ando at BN Pictures, the film retells the beloved Yoshiwara in Flames arc with freshly animated sequences.

What the Film Covers

The movie compiles episodes 139 through 146 of the original Gintama anime, adapting the Yoshiwara in Flames arc from Hideaki Sorachi's manga. Beyond a straightforward recap, the film incorporates anime-original material and previously unseen characters that expand the narrative beyond what aired in the television series.

Among the additions is Enkaku, an anime-original character who serves as the close aide to the arc's antagonist Hosen. Veteran voice actor Kappei Yamaguchi takes on the role, adding another recognizable name to an already stacked cast.

Production Team and Cast

Naoya Ando, known for his work on Paradox Live The Animation, directs the film. Taku Kishimoto - whose writing credits include Fruits Basket and Haikyu!! - penned the screenplay, while longtime Gintama director Yoichi Fujita supervised the project. Shinji Takeuchi, who previously worked on both Gintama and Fairy Tail, handles character design and serves as chief animation director.

The returning voice cast features Tomokazu Sugita as Gintoki Sakata, Daisuke Sakaguchi as Shinpachi Shimura, and Rie Kugimiya as Kagura. Kazuya Nakai reprises his role as Toshiro Hijikata, Kenichi Suzumura returns as Sogo Okita, and Satoshi Hino voices Kamui. Rock band SUPER BEAVER contributes the theme song "Sanzen" (Sparkling).

Japanese Theatrical Performance

The film earned approximately $2.64 million during its opening three days in Japanese theaters, selling 262,700 tickets and ranking second at the domestic box office. The theatrical run included IMAX screenings, marking a premium presentation for a franchise that built its reputation through television. A Japanese Blu-ray release is scheduled for August 26, one day before the Netflix premiere.

Why Yoshiwara in Flames Matters

The Yoshiwara in Flames arc is widely regarded as a turning point for Gintama. While the series is celebrated for its comedy and fourth-wall-breaking humor, this arc demonstrated its capacity for sustained dramatic storytelling and high-stakes action. The conflict pits the Odd Jobs trio and the Shinsengumi against Hosen, the King of the Night, in the underground city of Yoshiwara. It deepened the backstory of Kagura's family - particularly the introduction of her brother Kamui as a formidable threat - and set the stage for later dramatic arcs that defined the series.

The compilation format, bolstered by new animation from BN Pictures, offers both longtime fans and newcomers a streamlined way to experience the arc without navigating the broader series' 367-episode run.
