GKIDS will screen a brand-new 4K remaster of Studio 4C's Tekkonkinkreet in North American theaters on May 31 and June 1 to celebrate the acclaimed anime film's 20th anniversary.

GKIDS has acquired all North American rights to Tekkonkinkreet, the 2006 anime film from Studio 4C, and will screen a brand-new 4K remaster in theaters across North America on May 31 and June 1 to mark the film's 20th anniversary.
Directed by Michael Arias in his directorial debut, Tekkonkinkreet is based on the manga by three-time Eisner Award winner Taiyo Matsumoto, which was serialized in Weekly Big Comic Spirits from 1993 to 1994. The film follows two orphans named Black and White who live in Treasure Town, a gritty slum overrun by crime. When a yakuza boss named Snake plots to demolish their neighborhood for redevelopment, the brothers are drawn into a violent struggle to protect the only home they know.
The film earned widespread critical acclaim upon release, winning the 2008 Japan Academy Film Prize for Animation of the Year, the 2007 Fantasia Festival Golden Prize for Best Animated/Stop Motion Film, and the Ofuji Noburo Award at the 2006 Mainichi Film Awards. It also took home Best Original Story and Best Art Direction at the 2008 Tokyo Anime Awards.
The limited two-night theatrical event on May 31 and June 1 will present the film in both its original Japanese audio and the English dub. Tickets are available through the GKIDS website. A 4K UHD Blu-ray and digital download release is planned for later in 2026, giving fans a chance to own the remastered version at home after the theatrical run.
This acquisition marks GKIDS' third collaboration with Studio 4C this year alone, further cementing the distributor's role as a key North American home for prestigious Japanese animation. GKIDS president David Jesteadt noted that the film's thrilling action sequences, the heartbreaking relationship between the foster brothers, and the extraordinary design work have endured remarkably well over two decades.
Tekkonkinkreet stands as one of the most visually distinctive anime films ever produced. Its hand-drawn cityscapes, kinetic action choreography, and emotionally raw storytelling set it apart from the mainstream anime landscape of the mid-2000s. Matsumoto's source manga, published in North America by Viz Media, helped establish him as one of the most respected creators in the medium, and the film adaptation translated his dense, ink-heavy art style into fluid animation that remains striking by modern standards.
For viewers who missed the original theatrical run or only experienced the film on DVD, the 4K remaster offers a rare opportunity to see Treasure Town rendered with the visual fidelity the artwork always deserved. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment previously handled the film's North American home video release, but GKIDS now holds all distribution rights going forward.
GKIDS has steadily built a reputation as the premier North American distributor for acclaimed anime films, with its catalog spanning works from Studio Ghibli, Mamoru Hosoda, and Masaaki Yuasa alongside deep cuts like Tekkonkinkreet. The company's theatrical events consistently draw audiences who value seeing hand-drawn animation on the big screen, and this 20th anniversary screening should be no exception.
With screenings just days away on May 31 and June 1, anime fans across North America have a brief window to catch one of Studio 4C's finest works on the big screen in a presentation that finally matches the ambition of its animation.
