Netflix unveiled the first teaser trailer, key visual, and lead cast for The Ribbon Hero, an anime film inspired by Osamu Tezuka's Princess Knight, premiering worldwide on August 8.

Netflix revealed the first teaser trailer, key visual, and lead cast for The Ribbon Hero, an original anime film inspired by Osamu Tezuka's Princess Knight. The film premieres worldwide on the platform on August 8, 2026.
The Ribbon Hero reimagines elements from Tezuka's pioneering 1950s manga Princess Knight, which was previously adapted into a 52-episode television series by Mushi Production between 1967 and 1968. Rather than a straight adaptation, the new film crafts an original narrative around familiar themes of identity, courage, and transformation.
The story follows Sapphire, a princess whose kingdom of Silverland was destroyed by a catastrophic event known as Nergal. Left with nothing, she wanders in despair until she arrives in Goldland, where the kindness of its people offers her a fragile sense of hope. When the same threat resurfaces, Sapphire must find the strength to stand against it not just for herself, but for everyone who took her in.
The teaser opens on harrowing imagery of a kingdom in ruin, its soldiers scattered in the aftermath of calamity. A badly wounded Sapphire lets out a heart-rending cry before a mysterious figure appears before her. Enveloped in ribbons, Sapphire gains the power to transform, and the trailer shifts in tone as she declares her resolve to protect those in need. Scenes of her battling a towering monster are intercut with a glimpse of a menacing, smiling antagonist whose identity remains unrevealed.
The trailer establishes a dramatic visual contrast between the devastation of Silverland and the warmth of Goldland, showcasing fluid action animation and the film's painterly art direction.
Saya of the comedy duo Lalande voices Sapphire in what marks her first leading role in a feature-length animated production. Additional cast members have not yet been announced.
The film is directed by Yuki Igarashi, who served as a key animator on the first season of Jujutsu Kaisen and made his directorial debut with the Star Wars: Visions episode Lop and Ocho. Junko Komura is credited as script associate, while character designs are handled by Kei Mochizuki and Mai Yoneyama. Twin Engine produces the project with animation by studio Outline.
As a Netflix original film, The Ribbon Hero will be available on Netflix India simultaneously with the global premiere on August 8. The platform has steadily expanded its anime film slate in the region, and this high-profile Tezuka-inspired project continues that push. Indian subscribers can expect the film to land with Japanese audio and English subtitles at minimum on launch day.
With the August 8 premiere now locked and the first teaser setting the tone, further cast announcements and a full trailer are likely in the weeks ahead. The Ribbon Hero represents a significant bet by Netflix and Twin Engine on bringing classic Tezuka material to a new global audience through original storytelling rather than a direct retelling.
