MAPPA and Toho Animation confirmed on May 27 that Dorohedoro will return for a third season. The announcement arrived the same day the Season 2 finale aired, with returning director Yuichiro Hayashi sharing a commemorative illustration of the character Haru mid-song to mark the occasion.

From Cult Hit to Multi-Season Franchise

Dorohedoro is adapted from Q Hayashida's manga, which ran from 2000 to 2018 across 23 volumes. The story follows Caiman, an amnesiac whose head was transformed into that of a lizard by a sorcerer, and his partner Nikaido as they hunt for the one responsible in a grimy, chaotic world where sorcerers prey on ordinary humans. The manga earned a devoted following over its nearly two-decade run, and Viz Media publishes the English translation.

MAPPA brought the series to screen with a 12-episode first season that premiered on Netflix Japan in January 2020. The anime quickly built a reputation for its distinctive blend of dark fantasy, body horror, and offbeat comedy, standing out even in MAPPA's stacked production slate alongside titles like Jujutsu Kaisen. Hiroshi Seko handled series composition, Tomohiro Kishi designed the characters, and musical group (K)NoW_NAME provided the score — a creative lineup that helped define the show's grungy, irreverent tone.

Season 2 Wraps, Season 3 Begins

Season 2 debuted on April 1, 2026, launching almost simultaneously worldwide across multiple platforms including Crunchyroll and Netflix, with an English dub available from the start. The expanded rollout brought the series to a significantly wider audience than the first season's initially Japan-centric Netflix release. The second season's finale aired on May 27, and the Season 3 confirmation dropped immediately after a seamless transition that signals strong confidence from the production committee.
