Akira Toriyama, the legendary creator of Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump, was posthumously inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Awards Hall of Fame during San Diego Comic-Con 2026. The ceremony took place on Friday, July 25, honoring Toriyama as one of four Voters' Choice inductees.

A Long-Overdue Honor

Toriyama was selected from a pool of 16 nominees announced in February 2026. He joined fellow Voters' Choice inductees Chris Ware, Colleen Doran, and Jeff Smith in earning a place in the Hall of Fame - one of the most prestigious honors in the global comics industry. The Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, often called the Oscars of the comics world, have recognized outstanding contributions to the medium since 1988.

The induction carries particular weight given Toriyama's passing in March 2024. The dual induction of Toriyama and Nagai continues a growing trend of Japanese creators receiving recognition in the Eisner Hall of Fame. Nine Japanese creators had previously been inducted between 2002 and 2025, a list that stretches from Osamu Tezuka - widely regarded as the godfather of manga - to horror master Junji Ito. With Toriyama and Nagai now added, the roster of Japanese Hall of Fame members has grown to eleven, reflecting the increasing global appreciation for manga as a cornerstone of the comics medium.
