A Silent Voice Returns to Japanese Cinemas for Its 10th Anniversary

Kyoto Animation's A Silent Voice will return to Japanese cinemas on October 30, 2026, marking ten years since the film's original theatrical release. The revival will introduce the movie's first Dolby Cinema screenings, while an anniversary stage greeting is set for opening day in Tokyo.

What the anniversary release includes

The rerelease gives Japanese audiences another theatrical run for the 2016 film, which adapts Yoshitoki Oima's manga of the same name. Shochiku is again listed as distributor, and Kyoto Animation remains credited for animation production. A new promotional video and key visual accompany the anniversary campaign.

Dolby Cinema is the main new presentation format attached to the revival. This is the first time A Silent Voice will be shown in that format, giving the return a technical component beyond a standard repertory screening. The official announcement highlights the Dolby presentation alongside the broader theatrical rerelease, though individual theater schedules should be checked through the film's official venue listings.

The anniversary campaign also includes a newly drawn illustration by Oima. It depicts Shoya Ishida and Shoko Nishimiya at a movie theater, tying the original creator directly to the tenth-anniversary celebration. The image serves as a companion piece to the new key visual rather than a change to the film itself.

An opening-day stage greeting is scheduled at the Marunouchi Piccadilly Dolby Cinema in Tokyo. Miyu Irino, the voice of Shoya, and Saori Hayami, the voice of Shoko, are due to appear. The event is planned before the evening screening, adding a cast presentation to the October 30 launch.

Why the film is returning now

A Silent Voice first opened in Japan on September 17, 2016. Directed by Naoko Yamada and written by Reiko Yoshida, the film follows Shoya after his childhood bullying of Shoko, a deaf transfer student. Shoko leaves the school, and Shoya is later isolated by his classmates. As a high school student, he seeks her out in an effort to make amends, setting their renewed connection in motion.

The production credits also include character designer Futoshi Nishiya, composer Kensuke Ushio, art director Mutsuo Shinohara, and cinematographer Kazuya Takao. Aiko performed the theme song, "Koi wo Shita no wa." The production committee lists Kyoto Animation, Pony Canyon, ABC Animation, Quaras, Shochiku, and Kodansha, the publisher of Oima's original manga.

The central Japanese cast extends beyond Irino and Hayami. Aoi Yuki voices Shoko's younger sister Yuzuru, Kensho Ono plays Tomohiro Nagatsuka, Yuki Kaneko plays Naoka Ueno, Yui Ishikawa plays Miyoko Sahara, Megumi Han plays Miki Kawai, and Toshiyuki Toyonaga plays Satoshi Mashiba. Mayu Matsuoka voices Shoya as an elementary school student.

Its theatrical history makes the return more than a routine calendar booking. The original release expanded from a relatively limited opening into a long-running Japanese engagement and earned 2.3 billion yen at the domestic box office. It was also selected for an Excellent Animation of the Year honor at the Japan Academy Film Prize.

The anniversary program brings that production back to the format in which it debuted while adding Dolby Cinema for the first time. October 30 is now the confirmed start of the Japanese rerelease, with the Tokyo cast greeting serving as its opening-day milestone.
