Yoshitaka Amano's ZAN limited anime series has revealed a staff lineup packed with mecha anime legends, including Armored Trooper Votoms creator Ryosuke Takahashi and Gundam mechanical designer Kunio Okawara.

Yoshitaka Amano's ZAN, a limited anime series rooted in the artist's dark fantasy universe, has unveiled a staff roster stacked with veterans from some of the most iconic mecha franchises in anime history. A first trailer for the project is set to debut at Anime Expo in Los Angeles on July 3.
The staff lineup reads like a hall of fame for the mecha genre. Ryosuke Takahashi, the creator and director of Armored Trooper Votoms and Fang of the Sun Dougram, is handling series scripts. Kunio Okawara, the mechanical designer behind the original Mobile Suit Gundam and countless entries across the franchise, is on board for mechanical design. Moriyasu Taniguchi, who served as animation director on Dougram, Votoms, and Blue Comet SPT Layzner, takes the role of chief animation director.
Directing the series are Masashi Ikeda, whose credits include Mobile Suit Gundam Wing and Inuyasha, and Toru Yoshida, a mecha animation specialist with work on Layzner and Mobile Suit Gundam SEED. Art direction falls to Minoru Nishida, known for his work on The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? and Thundercats. Yuya Takashima, a writer on Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, rounds out the writing staff.
The project draws from Amano's DEVA ZAN body of work, a collection of over 300 artworks originally conceived around 2010. Dark Horse Comics published an art book of the collection in 2013. The anime adaptation promises a sci-fi action fantasy that crosses time and space, centered on relentless battles and dynamic sword-fighting action. The series will employ expressive hand-drawn animation combining Amano's original and newly created artwork.
Amano is one of the most celebrated artists in Japanese pop culture, best known internationally for his character designs on the early Final Fantasy games and his prolific fine art career. ZAN represents a rare opportunity for Amano to serve as original creator on an anime production built entirely around his artistic vision.
Yoshitaka Amano Inc., a Los Angeles-based entity established to oversee the project, is spearheading production. The company is working with animation production partners Jaymen Tokyo and Good Win, along with Twin Planet Co., Ltd. Producers on the project include Mariko Suzuki of M's Management Studio, Hiroaki Ikegami, Kazuhiko Yusa of Jaymen Tokyo, and Shin Koyamada of N Lite Japan. Dark Horse Comics and SOZO Comics are credited for special cooperation.
The project was previously described as a theatrical venture before shifting to a limited series format, though an episode count has not been disclosed.
The first trailer debuts July 3 at Anime Expo, giving attendees the earliest look at how Amano's art style translates into animation under the guidance of the assembled mecha veterans. With a staff whose combined credits span Gundam, Votoms, Macross, and Layzner, ZAN is positioning itself as a prestige project that bridges classic mecha craftsmanship with Amano's distinctive dark fantasy aesthetic. Further details on episode count, release window, and streaming or broadcast plans are expected to follow the Anime Expo reveal.
