The upcoming Witch on the Holy Night film unveiled a striking pair of new key visuals at FGO Fes. 2026 on Saturday, while confirming that a smartphone version of the visual novel will launch on November 20 - the same day the film opens in Japanese theaters.

A Dual Visual Collaboration

The "double visual" approach highlights the creative partnership at the heart of the project. The first visual was drawn by Hirokazu Koyama, the artist who handled graphics for the original Witch on the Holy Night visual novel at Type-Moon. The second was produced by ufotable, the animation studio bringing the story to the big screen. Both visuals feature protagonist Aoko Aozaki, with one also showcasing Alice Kuonji in the background.

Aniplex streamed the visual announcements during the event, and both images were subsequently shared across the film's official social media channels. The pairing underscores the close collaboration between Type-Moon and ufotable, two studios whose partnership stretches back to the Fate/stay night and Kara no Kyoukai franchises.

November 20 Double Launch

The film's Japanese theatrical premiere is locked in for November 20, 2026. In a move that ties the franchise's gaming and cinematic wings together, the smartphone port of the Witch on the Holy Night visual novel will also go live on the same date. The simultaneous release positions the film launch as a broader franchise event rather than a standalone theatrical debut.

The original Witch on the Holy Night visual novel first released on PC in Japan in 2012. A remastered edition arrived on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch in December 2022, going on to sell over 150,000 copies worldwide. A Steam version followed in December 2023, further expanding the title's global reach. The smartphone release will mark the visual novel's fourth platform.

Cast and Story

The film retains the voice cast established in the remastered visual novel. Haruka Tomatsu reprises her role as Aoko Aozaki, Kana Hanazawa returns as the enigmatic witch Alice Kuonji, and Yusuke Kobayashi voices Soujyuro Shizuki.

Set in the late 1980s, the story follows Aoko Aozaki, the heir to a storied magical bloodline, as she reluctantly begins her training under Alice Kuonji. Balancing the demands of ordinary school life with her growing magical responsibilities, Aoko finds her world further complicated by the arrival of the unassuming Soujyuro. Fans of the broader Type-Moon universe will recognize the Aozaki family name - Aoko's older sister Touko is a central figure in Kara no Kyoukai, another property adapted into a celebrated film series by ufotable.

What Lies Ahead

With the November 20 release date now accompanied by two new visuals and a confirmed smartphone launch, the Witch on the Holy Night film continues to build momentum heading into the fall season. Additional promotional materials and a potential full trailer are expected in the coming months as the theatrical premiere approaches.
