Character designer Takashi Okazaki has won a juried Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation for his work on "The Duel: Payback," an anime short from Star Wars: Visions Volume 3 produced by Kamikaze Douga, ANIMA, and Lucasfilm Ltd.

A Juried Honor for Anime Craftsmanship

The Television Academy announced the 78th Emmy Awards juried winners on August 12, 2026, with Okazaki recognized specifically for his character design contributions to the short. Unlike standard Emmy categories that follow a nomination-and-vote process, juried awards are evaluated directly by panels of industry peers - making the recognition a pointed testament to the artistic caliber of the work itself.

Okazaki was among five honorees in the Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation category. Fellow winners were recognized for their contributions to Eyes of Wakanda, Genndy Tartakovsky's Primal, and The Mighty Nein. The awards will be presented during the Creative Arts Emmy ceremonies on September 5-6 at the Peacock Theater at L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles, with an edited broadcast airing on FXX on September 12.

Inside "The Duel: Payback"

"The Duel: Payback" serves as a direct sequel to "The Duel," the opening short from the original Star Wars: Visions anthology, for which Okazaki also served as character designer. Directed by Takanobu Mizuno, the Volume 3 installment debuted on Disney+ in October 2025.

The short follows the Ronin as he faces off against a twisted Jedi known as the Grand Master, aided by unexpected allies. Kamikaze Douga's signature visual approach - a striking black-and-white palette punctuated by bursts of vivid color - became one of the most celebrated aesthetic choices across the entire Visions franchise when it debuted in the original anthology. Okazaki's character designs were foundational to that visual identity, and the sequel carried that artistic language forward with refined detail and expanded scope.

The fact that the Television Academy singled out character design on a short-form anime production underscores how deeply the artistry resonated with the juried panel. It is a rare distinction for a Japanese animation artist working within a Western franchise property.

Anime's Growing Presence at the Emmys

While anime feature films have steadily gained ground at international award ceremonies over the past decade, individual anime artists being honored at the Emmy Awards remains uncommon. Okazaki's win highlights an expanding appreciation for Japanese animation craftsmanship within the broader Western television industry, particularly as anthology formats like Visions create high-profile showcases for studio-driven artistic vision.

Kamikaze Douga, the Tokyo-based studio behind both "The Duel" shorts, has built a reputation for blending traditional Japanese art sensibilities with cutting-edge CG techniques. The studio's continued involvement in the Visions franchise has given its artists sustained international visibility, and Okazaki's Emmy validates that exposure with one of the television industry's highest honors.

Looking Ahead

The full 78th Emmy Awards ceremony will be hosted by Mariska Hargitay and airs on NBC on September 14, 2026. Okazaki's Creative Arts Emmy will be formally presented during the September 5-6 ceremonies. Star Wars: Visions Volume 3, including "The Duel: Payback," is available to stream on Disney+.
