Patlabor EZY, the franchise's first new anime in over a decade, opens in Japanese theaters on May 15 as an eight-episode series released across three theatrical installments.

Patlabor EZY, the long-awaited return of the Mobile Police Patlabor franchise, opens in Japanese theaters on May 15, 2026. The eight-episode series will be released across three theatrical installments produced by J.C.Staff under the direction of Yutaka Izubuchi.
The new series is set in 2030s Japan, where the push toward AI automation has rendered the iconic Labor mechs increasingly obsolete. Against this backdrop, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police's Special Vehicles Section 2 returns to action, this time operating with an upgraded AV-98Plus Ingram unit. The premise blends the franchise's hallmark police-procedural tone with questions about technological displacement a fitting evolution for a series that has always grounded its mecha storytelling in everyday working life.
Kazunori Ito, who wrote the screenplay for the original Patlabor films, returns as series composer and screenwriter. Mechanical designs come from Kanetake Ebikawa and Toshiaki Ihara, while character designs are handled by Takamitsu Sato.
Patlabor EZY will roll out in three compiled films, each packaging multiple episodes for a theatrical experience:
File 1: May 15, 2026
File 2: August 14, 2026
File 3: March 2027
This staggered theatrical model mirrors a format that has become increasingly popular for anime productions, allowing episodic storytelling to reach big screens before an eventual home-video or streaming release.
The production has assembled a strong voice cast. Sumire Uesaka leads as Towa Kuga alongside Kikunosuke Toya as Kippei Atori. Five additional cast members were confirmed earlier this year: Ami Koshimizu as Saki Hirata, Chikahiro Kobayashi as Akihiko Hazama, Setsuji Sato as Yuta Yanai, Yume Matsumura as Hachikuma Yuzuki, and veteran Megumi Hayashibara as Kimika Saeki.
Hayashibara's involvement is particularly notable given her deep ties to anime history, adding considerable star power to the ensemble.
Patlabor has been dormant since the mid-2010s short-film series and live-action project. EZY marks the franchise's first full-length animated production in over a decade, returning it to the hands of original creator collective Headgear. Director Yutaka Izubuchi brings his own mecha pedigree to the project, having previously directed RahXephon and served as a mechanical designer on numerous Gundam entries.
With File 1 arriving in theaters this week, fans of classic mecha anime will soon see whether Patlabor's grounded, character-driven approach to the genre can resonate with a new generation. File 2 follows in August, with the concluding installment set for March 2027.
