The cult psychological thriller manga finally gets an anime adaptation from Madhouse, premiering April 6 on Crunchyroll worldwide with a planned 26-episode two-cour run.

One of the most requested manga-to-anime adaptations of the past decade is finally here. Liar Game, Shinobu Kaitani's legendary psychological thriller, premiered as an anime on April 6 on Crunchyroll worldwide, excluding Japan and China. The series is produced by Madhouse, the studio behind Death Note, Hunter x Hunter, and One Punch Man, and it arrives with a committed two-cour, 26-episode order that gives the adaptation room to breathe.
The anticipation has been building for years. Liar Game's manga ran in Weekly Young Jump from 2005 to 2015 and developed a cult following for its intricate psychological games and morally complex characters. Two live-action Japanese drama seasons and a film adapted the material previously, but an anime version eluded fans until now.
College student Nao Kanzaki receives a mysterious letter and a suitcase containing 100 million yen. She has been forcibly entered into the Liar Game Tournament, a high-stakes competition where participants must lie, deceive, and manipulate their way to victory or face crippling personal debt. Hopelessly naive and trusting by nature, Nao turns to Shinichi Akiyama, a brilliant former con artist recently released from prison, to survive the tournament's escalating rounds of psychological warfare.
What makes Liar Game distinctive is its focus on game theory, trust dynamics, and moral philosophy. Each tournament round introduces a new game with rules that reward deception, and the tension comes from watching characters find unexpected strategies within those constraints.
Madhouse is arguably the ideal studio for this material, given its track record with cerebral, tension-driven narratives. The series is directed by Asami Kawano under chief director Yuzo Sato, with scripts by Tatsuhiko Urahata and character designs by Kei Tsuchiya. The music is composed by Yugo Kanno, whose atmospheric scores on Psycho-Pass and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure established him as one of the industry's most effective composers for thriller and suspense.
Saya Hitomi voices Nao Kanzaki, while Takeo Otsuka plays Shinichi Akiyama. Supporting cast includes Kazuhiro Nakaya, Nobuo Tobita, and Yoji Ueda.
The first two episodes received their world premiere at Sakura-Con in Seattle on April 5, screening at the Seattle Convention Center before the global Crunchyroll launch the following day. Early reactions from attendees praised the adaptation's pacing and visual style.
New episodes drop Mondays at 8:00 AM PT on Crunchyroll with English subtitles and a simultaneous English dub. A new short manga serialization also launched in 2026 to coincide with the anime premiere.
For fans of cerebral anime like Death Note, Kaiji, and Psycho-Pass, Liar Game occupies a similar space: a series where raw intelligence, careful observation, and strategic thinking matter more than physical power. With Madhouse's pedigree and a generous 26-episode runway, this adaptation has the foundation to become one of the spring season's defining titles. The two-cour format is particularly welcome, as Liar Game's elaborate game arcs require extended buildup and payoff cycles that a shorter single cour would struggle to accommodate.
