Kamikaze Douga's anime adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima: Legends unveiled new character visuals at Anime Expo 2026, showcasing designs for the Ronin, Hunter, and Assassin classes. The project features Gen Urobuchi handling series composition and Takashi Okazaki on character design, with a 2027 premiere set exclusively on Crunchyroll.

A Powerhouse Creative Team

The production staff assembled for Ghost of Tsushima: Legends reads like a who's-who of stylistically bold anime talent. Takanobu Mizuno directs at Kamikaze Douga, the studio celebrated for its distinctive CG-heavy visual approach in projects like Batman Ninja. Gen Urobuchi of Nitro Plus, the writer behind Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Fate/Zero, and Psycho-Pass, serves as series composition lead and co-scriptwriter alongside fellow Nitro Plus member Satoshi Maejima.

Takashi Okazaki, the creator and character designer of Afro Samurai, handles character designs for the anime. His sharp, ink-drenched aesthetic pairs naturally with the feudal Japanese setting and the game's emphasis on mythological warriors. The combination of Urobuchi's penchant for dark, psychologically complex narratives and Okazaki's visually striking character work sets an ambitious creative direction for the adaptation.

Character Visuals Bring the Classes to Life

The newly revealed visuals spotlight three of the four playable classes from the multiplayer game: the Ronin, the Hunter, and the Assassin. A group visual was also shared, presenting the characters together in a single composition. The visuals arrived via Sucker Punch Productions' official social media channels following the Anime Expo panel.

In the original Ghost of Tsushima: Legends game mode, each class carries a distinct combat identity. The Ronin functions as a healer and support fighter, the Hunter specializes in ranged attacks with a bow, and the Assassin focuses on stealth and critical-strike damage. How Urobuchi and Maejima translate these gameplay archetypes into narrative roles will be one of the adaptation's defining challenges. No voice cast has been announced yet.

Mythology Over History

The anime draws from the Legends multiplayer component of the Ghost of Tsushima franchise rather than the single-player campaign that followed samurai Jin Sakai during the 1274 Mongol invasion of Tsushima. The Legends mode pivots away from historical events entirely, grounding its stories in Japanese folklore and mythology. Supernatural creatures, spirit realms, and legendary warriors replace the more grounded political and military drama of the main game.

This distinction gives the creative team significant freedom. Urobuchi's writing has thrived in speculative and fantastical settings, from the wish-granting system of Madoka Magica to the dystopian crime-prediction apparatus in Psycho-Pass. A mythology-centric framework should play to those strengths, allowing the anime to build its own identity rather than retread familiar ground from the game's main storyline.

Production Partners and Distribution

The project is a collaboration between Crunchyroll, Aniplex, Sony Music, and PlayStation Productions. Hayate Inc. oversees production. The involvement of PlayStation Productions, which has been expanding Sony's gaming franchises into film and television, signals the strategic importance placed on the adaptation within the broader PlayStation IP ecosystem.

The anime was initially announced in January 2025, and the Anime Expo 2026 reveal marks the most substantial update on the project since that original announcement. Crunchyroll will serve as the exclusive streaming platform when the series premieres in 2027, though a more specific release window has not been confirmed.

What Comes Next

With character designs now public and the creative leads locked in, the next major milestone for Ghost of Tsushima: Legends will likely be a voice cast announcement and a full trailer. The 2027 premiere window leaves room for additional reveals at future events, and the involvement of Urobuchi and Okazaki has already positioned this as one of the more closely watched game-to-anime adaptations on the horizon.
