Madhouse's Ghost: End of Night Film Unveils Lead Cast and Teaser for February 2027

Madhouse's original anime film Ghost: End of Night has revealed its first teaser trailer alongside its lead cast. Director and screenwriter Shingo Natsume's debut original film will open in Japanese theaters on February 11, 2027, with Bandai Namco Filmworks handling distribution.

Lead Cast Announced

The teaser introduces two central characters and the actors voicing them. Mayu Hotta takes on the role of Neekei, a 15-year-old girl who received early selection status but struggles deeply with isolation and a fractured sense of belonging. Issei Takahashi voices Masu, a man grieving the loss of his family who wanders aimlessly while covering his body with tattoos. The trailer captures the pair's first voiced interaction, hinting at the emotional bond that will anchor the film's narrative.

A Dystopian Vision of a Post-Labor Society

Ghost: End of Night is set in a near-future world where labor is no longer necessary. In this seemingly utopian society, every person's worth is determined through a formal selection process at the age of 18. Neekei is a girl who continues seeking something "real" while resisting the comfortable order of a contented civilization. Her path intersects with Masu's as both characters navigate a system that has eliminated struggle but, in doing so, may have erased meaning along with it.

Natsume has described his ambitions for the project in distinctly personal terms, stating his goal is to create "a work that could be called fictional but is in tune with our current time and seeks realism." The tension between animated fantasy and grounded human emotion appears central to the film's identity.

Production Team and Music

The production brings together a notable creative lineup at Madhouse. Natsume Ono, the acclaimed manga artist known for works such as Ristorante Paradiso and ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept., provides the original character concepts. Norifumi Kugai adapts those designs for animation as the film's character designer, while Ohzora Kimijima handles the music composition.

Japanese alternative rock band Hitsujibungaku contributes to the soundtrack with their song "Sugar," which serves as both the theme song and an insert song featured prominently in the teaser. The band's atmospheric sound complements the film's contemplative tone, adding a layer of emotional texture to the trailer's imagery.

Manga Adaptation Already Underway

A manga adaptation of Ghost: End of Night, drawn by artist himiko, launched in Kadokawa's Young Ace magazine on August 4 - just days before the teaser's debut. The simultaneous rollout of the manga alongside the film's first promotional material signals a coordinated multimedia push ahead of the February 2027 opening.
