The legendary post-apocalyptic martial arts franchise gets a completely new anime adaptation from TMS Entertainment, premiering April 10 on Tokyo MX and streaming globally on Prime Video.

Kenshiro walks the wasteland once more. The first full-length Fist of the North Star anime in 18 years premieres on April 10 on Tokyo MX and BS11, with Prime Video streaming the series globally on the same day. The new adaptation marks the franchise's 40th anniversary and aims to introduce one of manga's most iconic stories to a new generation.
The series, titled Fist of the North Star: Hokuto no Ken, is a ground-up adaptation of Buronson and Tetsuo Hara's original 1983 manga. TMS Entertainment leads production, with Warner Bros. Japan backing the project as a major tentpole release. The anime uses CG animation produced by NIA Animation and Studio BACU, a deliberate choice to render the manga's brutal fight choreography and desolate post-apocalyptic landscapes with a scale and fluidity that the production team felt traditional animation would struggle to match.
Hiroshi Maeda directs, with Kazuhiko Inukai handling series composition. Naoki Hisatsune is responsible for character design, translating Tetsuo Hara's hyper-muscular aesthetic into a modern CG pipeline. Yuki Hayashi, whose credits include My Hero Academia and Haikyu!!, composes the music, bringing his signature ability to escalate emotional intensity through orchestral scoring.
Shunsuke Takeuchi voices protagonist Kenshiro, the last successor of the deadly Hokuto Shinken martial art who wanders a nuclear wasteland searching for his kidnapped fiancee. Koji Yusa plays Shin, Kenshiro's rival and master of the opposing Nanto Seiken style who set the story's tragedy in motion. Saori Hayami portrays Yuria, Kenshiro's fiancee whose fate drives the narrative's opening conflict.
The original manga ran from 1983 to 1988 in Weekly Shonen Jump and has sold over 100 million copies worldwide. The 1984 TV anime became a global phenomenon, introducing audiences worldwide to Kenshiro's signature catchphrase and explosive fighting style. But the franchise hasn't had a full-length anime project since the 2008 film Legend of the True Savior: Part 5.
This adaptation aims to faithfully retell the original story with modern production values, targeting both longtime fans and newcomers. The CG approach is a calculated gamble. Fans of the original's hand-drawn aesthetic may be skeptical of the shift, but the production team has emphasized fidelity to the manga's raw intensity and visceral action. A short anime companion piece, Elegy for the Henchmen, premiered in January 2026 to warm up audiences for the main series.
The series airs Thursdays at midnight on Tokyo MX, with Prime Video simulcasting worldwide.
