Crunchyroll has reached 21 million paid subscribers worldwide, adding four million in a single year as global demand for anime continues to accelerate.

Crunchyroll has hit 21 million paid subscribers worldwide, the Sony-owned anime platform confirmed on May 8. The milestone marks a jump of four million subscribers in just 12 months, up from the 17 million figure reported in May 2025.
The four-million-subscriber gain represents roughly 24 percent year-over-year growth, a pace that underscores how quickly anime is moving from niche fandom to mainstream global entertainment. Crunchyroll now operates in more than 200 countries and territories, offering a library of over 50,000 episodes spanning series, films, and specials alongside music and a curated gaming catalog through Crunchyroll Game Vault.
Rahul Purini, president of Crunchyroll, framed the achievement as validation of anime's broadening cultural footprint. "Reaching 21 million subscribers is a powerful testament to the passionate, global community that has embraced anime as a leading form of entertainment," Purini stated.
Several high-profile titles have fueled subscriber acquisition over the past year. The platform's current slate includes heavy-hitters such as One Piece, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Solo Leveling, and Jujutsu Kaisen, alongside newer additions like Daemons of the Shadow Realm and Witch Hat Atelier. The recent theatrical-to-streaming arrival of Chainsaw Man: The Movie Reze Arc has further bolstered the catalog.
Crunchyroll's strategy of pairing simulcast episodes with a deep back-catalog gives it a dual appeal: day-one access for seasonal viewers and a vast discovery pipeline for newcomers exploring anime for the first time. The Game Vault feature, which bundles curated mobile games into existing subscription tiers, adds another retention lever that most competing services lack.
The subscriber jump lands at a time when the anime industry at large is posting record numbers. Global licensing revenue, theatrical box-office performance, and merchandise sales have all trended upward, and Crunchyroll's growth sits squarely in that current. Sony's decision to consolidate its anime assets under the Crunchyroll brand absorbing Funimation's library and subscriber base in 2022 continues to pay dividends by giving the platform an unmatched depth of content.
Crunchyroll's presence in India remains part of its broader 200-plus-territory footprint. While the platform does not break out regional subscriber figures, India's fast-growing anime community visible through rising convention attendance and social-media engagement positions it as one of the key emerging markets for the service. Indian fans can access the Mega Fan tier, which includes ad-free viewing and full catalog access, through the platform's tiered pricing structure.
The timing of the announcement is notable: Crunchyroll's 10th annual Anime Awards ceremony is scheduled for May 23 in Tokyo, with winners determined entirely by fan voting. The event doubles as a showcase for upcoming titles and partnerships, and a 21-million-strong subscriber base gives the platform significant leverage in future licensing negotiations.
Whether Crunchyroll can sustain this growth rate will depend on how well it continues to lock down exclusive simulcasts, expand its original programming slate, and convert free or ad-supported viewers into paying subscribers. For now, the trajectory points firmly upward.
