Smoking Behind the Supermarket Anime Adds Four Cast Members, Heads to Crunchyroll in July

The television anime adaptation of Jinushi's romantic comedy manga Smoking Behind the Supermarket With You has added four new voice cast members ahead of its July 2026 premiere on TBS. Crunchyroll confirmed international distribution during its CCXP Mexico panel on April 26.

Four actors join the previously announced leads:

Toa Yukinari as Goto

Megumi Toyoguchi as Ono

Rikuya Yasuda as Obata

Yoko Hikasa as Maezawa

They complement the core trio of Takuya Sato (Sasaki), Seena Hoshiki (Yamada), and Shinya Takahashi (Suzuki). Yoko Hikasa is a well-established name in the industry, known for lead roles across multiple high-profile franchises, while Megumi Toyoguchi brings extensive experience in mature supporting roles. The expanded cast rounds out the workplace ensemble that drives much of the manga's comedic and romantic dynamics.

Production Details

Asahi Production handles animation for the 12-episode series under the co-direction of Masato Suzuki and Aoi Mori. Mio Inoue serves as series composer with Yasuka Otaki designing the characters. The anime will air every Thursday at 11:56 PM JST on TBS and 27 affiliated channels starting in July.

Streaming Plans

In a notable move, ABEMA will release all 12 episodes simultaneously on June 3 for its premium subscribers in Japan, giving them the full series roughly a month before the traditional television broadcast begins. This early-access strategy mirrors a growing trend among Japanese streaming platforms looking to attract paying subscribers with exclusive timing windows.

For viewers outside Japan, Crunchyroll has secured distribution rights spanning North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, CIS, and India. The platform will stream the series alongside the weekly Japanese TV broadcast in July.

The franchise began life as a Twitter webcomic in March 2022 before Jinushi brought it to Square Enix's Big Gangan magazine as a full serialization. The manga follows the quiet romantic tension between two convenience-store coworkers who share cigarette breaks behind their workplace a simple premise that resonated widely with readers drawn to its understated character writing and humor. Eight compiled volumes have been published in Japan as of January 2026, building a loyal readership that helped greenlight the anime adaptation.

India Availability

With Crunchyroll confirming India among its distribution territories, domestic fans will have day-and-date access to new episodes each week starting in July. No separate pricing or platform restrictions have been announced for the Indian market.
