Aito Aoyagi's mystery novel Red Riding Hood: A Detective Story is officially getting a TV anime adaptation set to premiere in 2027. Studio BENTEN Film is handling production, with Yume Miyamoto cast as the titular Red Riding Hood and an official website, teaser trailer, and teaser visual all unveiled alongside the announcement.

A Fairy Tale World Meets Detective Fiction

The story follows a girl known only as "Red Riding Hood" who embarks on a journey through a world populated by fairy tale characters. Along the way, she keeps getting swept up in incident after incident, using her innate curiosity and clever mind to unravel the mysteries she encounters. The premise blends the charm of classic fairy tales with a detective fiction framework, placing familiar storybook figures into scenarios that demand sharp deduction rather than magic.

Aoyagi's original novel was published by Futabasha in August 2020 and found a readership drawn to its inventive genre mashup. The property later received a manga adaptation illustrated by Tanakanoka, which ran its course and concluded in June 2025. The TV anime marks the franchise's first animated adaptation.

Staff and Cast

Itsuro Kawasaki is directing the series and also handling scriptwriting duties, giving him unified creative control over the adaptation's narrative direction. Character designs are being crafted by Manami Minakata and Yuko Yahiro, and a commemorative illustration by Minakata was released to mark the announcement.

The broader production team includes art directors Izumi Hoki and Hiroshi Kato, color setting by Tomoe Yoshimura, compositing director Rieko Koike, and editor Daisuke Hiraki. BENTEN Film, the studio bringing the project to life, takes the reins on what shapes up as a distinctive addition to its portfolio.

On the cast side, Yume Miyamoto voices Red Riding Hood, the sharp-witted protagonist at the center of every case. Akira Sekine joins as Pinocchio, suggesting the fairy tale world's ensemble will feature reimagined versions of well-known characters in roles beyond their traditional stories.

Source Material and Franchise Growth

The novel's journey from a standalone Futabasha publication in 2020 to a multimedia franchise reflects steady growth. The manga adaptation gave the story a visual identity over its multi-year run, and the anime now extends that reach to a wider audience. Fans of the manga who followed it through its conclusion in 2025 will have a built-in familiarity with the characters and mysteries heading into the animated version.

The fairy tale detective concept places the series in a niche that few anime occupy. While mystery anime are well-established and fairy tale retellings surface periodically, the combination of both within a single framework gives Red Riding Hood: A Detective Story a distinct identity in the 2027 anime lineup.

What Comes Next

With the teaser trailer and visual now public, further details on the anime - including a more specific premiere date, additional cast members, and streaming availability - are expected in the months ahead. The 2027 premiere window leaves room for the production to roll out information gradually as the series takes shape at BENTEN Film.
