TV Asahi has announced Obocchama-kun REBORN, an all-new television anime scheduled to air across its Japanese network in 2027. The revival is being developed as a Japan-India production, with original Chama voice actor Chie Kojiro returning to lead the cast.

What the new anime will include

Obocchama-kun REBORN marks the first newly produced anime for the comedy franchise since the earlier television series ended in 1992. Rather than remastering or repackaging old episodes, the project will consist of new animation. Its stories will draw from notable chapters of Yoshinori Kobayashi's manga that were not adapted for the previous series, while also adding original material under Kobayashi's full supervision.

Kojiro will again voice Chama Obo, the extraordinarily wealthy heir whose unchecked spending, unusual expressions, and chaotic behavior drive the series. She has played the character since the original television anime began in 1989. The announcement arrived with a teaser visual and promotional video that reintroduce Chama, his turtle-riding entrance, and several examples of his distinctive wordplay.

TV Asahi is producing the series. India's Green Gold Animation is handling animation production, while Shin-Ei Animation and Sony Pictures Networks India are credited with production cooperation. Those companies give the revival a creative and production base spanning both countries.

The manga began running in Monthly CoroCoro Comic in 1986, making the new project part of its 40th anniversary period. Its original anime became known for Chama's exaggerated wealth and a comic vocabulary built from altered everyday phrases. That mixture of slapstick, friendship, and family stories is also central to the premise of the revival.

At the center of the story is Chama, heir to the immensely wealthy Obo family. His enormous financial resources and impulsive personality repeatedly pull his relatives and classmates into chaotic situations. Beneath the extravagant gags, the series also uses those relationships to tell stories about friendship and affection.

Why India is central to the comeback

The route to REBORN began with the older anime's performance in India. After the series aired there in 2021, it ranked first among children's channels for 40 of that year's 52 weeks, according to TV Asahi's announcement. Demand from India for another series helped start discussions involving TV Asahi, the rights side represented by Yoshirin Kikaku, and Indian partners.

That history explains why the title is more than a domestic Japanese revival. The new production brings together a Japanese broadcaster and rights representatives with animation and television partners in India, reflecting where renewed interest in Obocchama-kun became strong enough to push a sequel forward.

Kobayashi said he is interested in how children growing up in Japan's current Reiwa era will respond to Chama's style of comedy. Kojiro likewise described the recording sessions as collaborative and energetic, indicating that voice work is already underway.

Obocchama-kun REBORN is confirmed for TV Asahi's network in 2027. A specific premiere date, episode count, and wider streaming plans have not yet been announced.
