Doga Kobo's body-swap palace drama Though I Am an Inept Villainess: Tale of the Butterfly-Rat Body Swap in the Maiden Court premieres July 12 on TV Tokyo in Japan, with Netflix streaming the series the same day across Asia. Crunchyroll holds the streaming rights for North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, CIS, and the Indian Subcontinent, premiering episodes on July 12 alongside the Japanese broadcast.

A Palace Intrigue Built on Body Swaps

Based on Satsuki Nakamura's light novel series - which has surpassed 3 millions copies in circulation - the anime unfolds in a kingdom inspired by historical China, where five noble clans each put forth a maiden as an imperial consort. Only one will ultimately be crowned empress. The frail and beautiful Kou Reirin, widely known as the "butterfly" of the court, is the clear frontrunner to marry the crown prince. But when the brash Shu Keigetsu - nicknamed the "court rat" - lashes out at Reirin during the glittering Lantern Festival, Reirin wakes up not in her own chambers but in the palace dungeons, trapped inside Keigetsu's body.

The body-swap premise propels a story that blends political scheming with supernatural mystery, as Reirin must navigate court intrigue from a position of weakness while unraveling why the swap happened in the first place.

Source Material and English Release

Nakamura's light novel series launched in December 2020 with illustrations by YukiKana and has reached 12 volumes, with the most recent installment published on March 31, 2026. A manga adaptation illustrated by Ei Ohitsuji runs in Monthly Comic Zero-Sum magazine. Seven Seas Entertainment licenses the English-language edition of the novels under the full title Though I Am an Inept Villainess: Tale of the Butterfly-Rat Body Swap in the Maiden Court, giving the franchise an established international readership heading into the anime's debut.

Staff and Cast

Mitsue Yamazaki directs the production at Doga Kobo, with Yoshiko Nakamura handling series scripts and Ai Kikuchi serving as character designer. The pairing of director Yamazaki and scriptwriter Nakamura brings together two veterans with deep experience in character-driven drama.

Manaka Iwami voices the lead role of Kou Reirin, while Natsumi Kawaida plays Shu Keigetsu. Makoto Furukawa takes on Ei Gyomei, and Yuichiro Umehara voices Shin-u. The supporting cast rounds out with Hana Hishikawa as Riirii, alongside Ai Kayano, Mai Nakahara, Inori Minase, and Yui Ishikawa filling additional roles in the imperial court.

Delayed from Spring to Summer

The anime was originally scheduled to debut during the spring 2026 season in April but was pushed back to July due to production delays announced in February. The shift places the series squarely in the summer 2026 lineup, where it joins a competitive season of new premieres.

Where and When to Watch

The series begins its broadcast run on TV Tokyo and affiliated channels in Japan on July 12. Netflix streams the anime the same day across its Asian territories. Crunchyroll also picks up the series starting July 12, covering North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, CIS, and the Indian Subcontinent. This simulcast release ensures most international viewers will have access to the series on the exact same day as the Japanese premiere.
