Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO Sets January 15, 2027 Release With New Trailer

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO will open in Japanese theaters on January 15, 2027. The newly released trailer centers on Shinn Asuka and introduces Daisuke Ono as Leonard Valway, a character making his first appearance in an animated entry of the SEED series.

The new trailer fills the gap before SEED FREEDOM

FREEDOM ZERO is positioned as a prequel to the 2024 film Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM and a bridge from the events of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY. Shinn serves as the protagonist as the story revisits C.E. 74, after the conflict surrounding the Destiny Plan and while Cagalli Yula Athha leads efforts to establish the world peace monitoring organization COMPASS.

The plot begins with Shinn still unable to determine the path he should follow. After the Strike Freedom Gundam is transferred to the provisional COMPASS base on Onogoro Island, it is stolen that night, and he and his allies return to battle to contain the incident and recover the mobile suit.

The trailer opens with a reconciliation between Shinn and Kira Yamato before moving through Shinn's uncertainty and new mobile suit action. Kira and Athrun Zala also appear in the teaser visual alongside Shinn, who stands amid ruins marked by battle. The production additionally revealed the Gouf Ignited Custom as a new mobile suit for the film.

The underlying scenario was written after SEED DESTINY aired and while SEED FREEDOM was being planned. It is credited to the late series composer Chiaki Morosawa, Shigeru Morita, and director Mitsuo Fukuda, who is also handling the screenplay.

Daisuke Ono joins as Leonard Valway

Leonard previously appeared in Moonlight Valkyrie, a novel created as a bonus connected to SEED FREEDOM. He is a high-ranking red-uniformed ZAFT Academy graduate known as the Raging Lion. His assignment brings him to Orb with Agnes Giebenrath while transporting the Strike Freedom and Infinite Justice.

FREEDOM ZERO marks Leonard's first appearance in a screen production, with Daisuke Ono providing his voice. Ono previously played Sven Cal Bayang in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED C.E. 73: STARGAZER, giving him roles on different sides of the franchise's conflict. Returning cast members include Kenichi Suzumura as Shinn, Soichiro Hoshi as Kira, Akira Ishida as Athrun, Maaya Sakamoto as Lunamaria Hawke, and Houko Kuwashima as Agnes.

The release announcement also launched the SEED Series Grand Prix 2026 fan vote. The ballot covers 287 moments tied to 55 characters from SEED, SEED DESTINY, and SEED FREEDOM. Voting runs through November 30, with results planned for December. Top-ranked moments will inspire newly drawn artwork intended for a FREEDOM ZERO admission bonus.

Advance theater tickets go on sale in Japan on October 16, with the first ticket-card release accompanied by a clear file featuring the teaser visual while supplies last. Two FREEDOM ZERO stage events are also scheduled at GUNDAM-Con2027 SIDE MAKUHARI on January 10 and 11, shortly before the film's January 15 theatrical opening.
