Science SARU's reimagining of Ghost in the Shell, directed by Kenji Iwaisawa (Mokochan), premieres in July 2026 on Prime Video with a new trailer unveiled at AnimeJapan 2026.

Science SARU has locked a July 2026 premiere window for its new television adaptation of Masamune Shirow's Ghost in the Shell, with a fresh trailer debuted at AnimeJapan 2026 confirming a Prime Video global release. The studio describes the project as a full reimagining of the source manga rather than a continuation of any prior screen version.
The trailer leans into a deliberately retro aesthetic: grainy film texture, muted neon, and a 1990s-coded color palette that evokes the era of Shirow's original 1989 manga rather than the sleek digital sheen of the 1995 Mamoru Oshii film or the 2002 Stand Alone Complex series. Major Motoko Kusanagi, Batou, and the rest of Public Security Section 9 appear in redesigned forms, with character art that skews closer to Shirow's hand-drawn linework. The cut emphasises street-level cyberpunk crowded Niihama alleyways, analog CRT monitors, chunky cybernetic prosthetics over the chrome futurism usually associated with the franchise.
The series is directed by Kenji Iwaisawa, who goes by Mokochan and previously helmed the cult rock-film On-Gaku: Our Sound. His selection signals an auteur-driven take rather than a studio house-style production, and aligns with Science SARU's track record of handing major properties to distinctive directors Masaaki Yuasa on Devilman Crybaby, Abel Gongora on Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, and Eunyoung Choi on numerous shorts. Science SARU is producing the animation in-house, with the official project page confirming the studio's direct involvement on production and design.
This is the first fully new Ghost in the Shell anime series since Production I.G's SAC_2045, which concluded its Netflix run in 2022. It is also the first time a studio outside the Production I.G family has led a Ghost in the Shell animated project.
The series premieres globally on Prime Video in July 2026 as an Amazon original anime, part of the platform's continued push into first-window anime licensing. An episode count has not been officially disclosed, and no simulcast schedule beyond the July launch month has been published on the project's official page. Japanese broadcast details, if any, have not been confirmed alongside the streaming debut.
Prime Video India carries Amazon's original anime slate day-and-date with the global release in most recent cases, including titles like Ninja Kamui and Uzumaki. On that pattern, Indian subscribers should expect the Ghost in the Shell reboot to stream on Prime Video India from its July 2026 premiere, though the platform has not yet listed a dedicated India page for the title. Subtitle and dub language options for the Indian storefront have not been announced.
Outstanding questions include the episode count, the Japanese voice cast, the composer, and whether Prime Video plans a weekly rollout or a full-season drop. Science SARU typically publishes staff and cast lists in tranches ahead of premiere, so expect key creative credits particularly character designer and music to surface between now and July.
