GATE 2: Tides of Conflict revealed its second key visual showcasing the main cast and announced a global Vocaloid Collection collaboration to select its ending theme.

Studio M2's GATE 2: Tides of Conflict has unveiled its second key visual, introducing the anime's main cast in a striking maritime composition. Alongside the visual, the production committee announced an unprecedented collaboration with the Vocaloid Collection Summer 2026 event to crowdsource the sequel's official ending theme.
The freshly revealed key visual places the core cast front and center against a sweeping oceanic backdrop, underscoring the sequel's shift from the landlocked fantasy setting of the original GATE to a naval theater. Front and center is Petty Officer Hajime Tokushima, a former chef now serving aboard the submarine Kitashio under the command of Captain Edajima. Joining the crew are Princess Primera, pirate heir Shura no Arch, and the enigmatic Ship Guardian Odette Ze Nebula.
The story follows Tokushima's unit as they infiltrate the coastal nation of Tinae on a mission to rescue a kidnapped journalist, navigating wars, pirate fleets, and sea creatures lurking beneath the waves. The official English account confirmed a 2027 broadcast window, though no specific season has been locked in yet.
Perhaps the most unusual announcement is the ending theme selection process. Rather than commissioning a traditional artist, the GATE 2 production is partnering with the Vocaloid Collection Summer 2026 event to open submissions to creators around the globe. Participants will compose original tracks using Vocaloid synthesized vocals and submit them through the event's standard entry process.
The winning composition will become the anime's official ending song. Studio M2 will animate a dedicated 90-second ending sequence set to the chosen track. While the Vocaloid version drives the competition phase, the broadcast version will feature a human vocalist selected through a separate Utaite Collection Fall 2026 collaboration, giving the winning song a fresh live-vocal arrangement for its on-air debut.
This marks one of the first times a major anime production has turned to the Vocaloid creator community for a mainline theme song, blurring the line between fan-driven and studio-driven music production.
The sequel retains key creative leadership from the original series. Director Toru Takahashi helms the project at Studio M2, with series composition and scripts handled by returning writer Tatsuhiko Urahata. Character designs are by Shigeru Fujita, and production cooperation comes from GENCO.
GATE 2 will also make a physical appearance at Anime Expo 2026, running July 2 through 5 in Los Angeles. The booth will feature a Production Walkthrough Gallery showcasing behind-the-scenes materials from Studio M2, giving attendees an early look at the creative process behind the sequel.
With a 2027 broadcast confirmed and the Vocaloid submission window opening this summer, GATE 2: Tides of Conflict is building momentum well ahead of its premiere. The ending theme contest in particular adds a participatory layer that could generate significant community engagement in the months leading up to air. Specific broadcast details and streaming partners remain to be announced.
