Cygames has acquired all shares of veteran 3DCG and VFX studio Griot Groove, whose credits span Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Ninja Gaiden 4, Attack on Titan and Chainsaw Man.

Cygames has fully acquired Griot Groove, a 30-year-old Japanese 3DCG, VFX and motion-capture studio whose credits stretch from Attack on Titan and Chainsaw Man to Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Ninja Gaiden 4. The Osaka-based publisher announced on its Japanese corporate site on May 2, 2026 that it had acquired all shares in the studio, making it a wholly owned subsidiary.
Founded in 1996, Griot Groove specialises in 3DCG animation and visual-effects production, with a service line that spans games, films, commercials and television anime. The studio also operates an in-house motion-capture pipeline, a capability that has made it a recurring partner for high-end console games and action-heavy anime sequences.
On the anime side, the studio has handled CG and VFX work on Attack on Titan Final Season THE FINAL CHAPTERS, Chainsaw Man and Tokyo Ghoul. Its game-side credits include Square Enix's Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Team Ninja's Ninja Gaiden 4 and Bandai Namco's Tekken 8 three titles that lean heavily on motion-capture and cinematic CG work.
Griot Groove also spun out an AI production label called Black Relic in 2023, operating in both Japan and Spain. That subsidiary now sits inside the Cygames group as part of the share transfer.
In its announcement, Cygames said the acquisition is intended to "improve its current video production and quality." The company is best known for mobile titles such as Granblue Fantasy, Uma Musume Pretty Derby and Shadowverse, and has been steadily expanding into console releases and anime production over the past several years through its CygamesPictures studio and the Cygames anime label.
Bringing Griot Groove fully in-house gives Cygames direct access to a senior 3DCG and motion-capture team without having to compete with rival publishers and anime studios for outsourced slots. The Japanese animation industry has been operating at near-capacity for several years, and 3DCG specialists in particular are a bottleneck for action and mecha productions. A captive vendor reduces scheduling risk on tentpole projects and allows Cygames to plan multi-year animation slates with more confidence.
The Black Relic AI subsidiary is the more forward-looking piece of the deal. Cygames has previously talked publicly about using machine-learning tools to accelerate in-between work and asset generation, and folding an existing AI production house into the group gives it a research arm that already has live commercial projects.
Cygames did not indicate any change to Griot Groove's existing client roster, and the studio is expected to continue servicing third-party game and anime projects already in its pipeline. Cygames has historically allowed acquired studios to keep operating under their own brand CygamesPictures, for example, retained its identity after being folded in and the same pattern appears likely here.
For Indian viewers, the practical impact is indirect but real. The 3DCG and VFX work Griot Groove contributes shows up in titles streamed on Crunchyroll and Netflix, and the studio's involvement on flagship console games means its output also reaches PlayStation and Xbox audiences in India. The acquisition closes during 2026; financial terms were not disclosed.
