Crunchyroll has partnered with Appning by FORVIA to bring its anime streaming library directly into connected vehicles. The collaboration will initially launch on BMW and Mini vehicles before expanding to over 40 additional automotive brands worldwide.

Anime Hits the Road

The strategic collaboration integrates Crunchyroll's full subscription catalog into in-car entertainment systems powered by Appning by FORVIA, a platform that already serves dozens of automotive manufacturers. BMW vehicles will use Appning's in-app store to provide seamless access to the streaming service from the dashboard display.

Drivers and passengers across North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia, India, and Australia will eventually gain access to Crunchyroll through their vehicle's built-in infotainment system. The rollout covers a substantial footprint of the global auto market, with the 40-plus brand roster representing a significant push into automotive entertainment.

TiVo is also part of the integration, enabling a personalized content discovery feature that lets passengers explore curated anime selections directly from the vehicle interface. This layer of recommendation technology aims to replicate the browsing experience passengers would expect from a home streaming setup.

Safety First, Streaming Second

The in-car implementation follows strict safety protocols. Video playback is fully disabled while the vehicle is in motion, restricting all visual content - including pop-ups and other potentially distracting elements - from appearing on the front-seat display during driving. Once the vehicle is parked, full streaming access becomes available.

This approach mirrors similar safety frameworks adopted by other streaming services that have moved into the automotive space, including YouTube's own in-car restrictions. The design reflects broader industry standards for integrating entertainment apps into connected vehicles without compromising driver attention.

Crunchyroll's Platform Expansion Strategy

The automotive partnership fits into a broader pattern of Crunchyroll aggressively diversifying its distribution footprint beyond traditional phones, tablets, and smart TVs. The platform has recently launched on Samsung TV Plus, YouTube Primetime Channels, and even Delta Air Lines in-flight entertainment systems. Moving into vehicles represents the next frontier in that expansion strategy.

Crunchyroll's push into new platforms comes after the service eliminated its free ad-supported streaming tier in December 2025. The platform now operates exclusively on paid subscription plans ranging from $9.99 to $17.99 per month, with different tiers offering features like offline viewing and multiple simultaneous streams. In-car subscribers will need an active Crunchyroll subscription to access content through Appning.

What This Means for Anime Fans on the Go

For passengers on road trips or waiting in parked vehicles, the integration opens up access to one of the largest dedicated anime libraries available. The full Crunchyroll catalog - spanning simulcast seasonal titles, classic series, and original productions - will be accessible through the vehicle's native entertainment system without requiring a separate mobile device or hotspot workaround.

The partnership also signals growing mainstream recognition of anime as a content category worth building dedicated automotive integrations for, rather than simply relying on general-purpose video apps. FORVIA's decision to bring Crunchyroll onto its platform alongside other major streaming services positions anime as a first-class entertainment option in connected vehicles.

No specific launch date has been announced for the BMW and Mini rollout, though the collaboration was formally revealed on August 12, 2026. The timeline for expansion to the remaining 40-plus automotive brands has not yet been disclosed. Crunchyroll is available on most major streaming devices and platforms, with the automotive integration set to add yet another access point for its growing global subscriber base.
