Akira returns to UK and Ireland cinemas April 17 in a 4K IMAX re-release from Anime Limited, with both IMAX and standard bookings open through major UK chains in subtitled Japanese and English dub formats.

Akira returns to UK and Ireland cinemas on April 17 in a 4K IMAX re-release presented by Anime Limited. The theatrical run places Katsuhiro Otomo's 1988 cyberpunk landmark back in commercial cinemas for the first time in over five years, with both IMAX and standard-screen bookings currently open through major UK chains.
The UK distributor has confirmed participation across the main national cinema chains, with IMAX presentations at the sites that carry the format. The release is not a limited anniversary run: bookings extend beyond the opening weekend into a standard first-run window, matching the approach Anime Limited used on its earlier Neon Genesis Evangelion and Ghost in the Shell theatrical distributions in the UK.
The 4K presentation is the same remaster that premiered at Japanese theatrical showings in 2020. Anime Limited has paired the 4K source with the IMAX format for UK and Ireland audiences, producing the first large-format cinema run the film has had in the region since the 1990s. Viewers can book either the subtitled Japanese-language presentation or the English dub, with ticket listings marking the language option at purchase.
The 4K version restores colour saturation across the film's post-apocalyptic Neo-Tokyo palette, with particular attention to the motorcycle chase sequences and Tetsuo's transformation set pieces. Otomo supervised the remaster personally. The audio has also been upmixed to Atmos for the large-format presentations, with a separate 2.0 stereo track preserved for standard screens.
The film's original 1988 theatrical cut remains intact, no additional scenes, no reordered sequences. The remaster is a technical upgrade rather than an alternate-cut release, which is the approach Otomo has consistently preferred across the film's past re-releases.
Anime Limited's deal covers the UK and Ireland only. A North American IMAX window has not been confirmed by the US distributor. Akira has no announced Indian cinema release for this re-release cycle; the film remains available on home video in the region through importers, but without a domestic theatrical partner the 4K IMAX presentation is not scheduled to reach Indian screens in the near term.
Akira's re-release into a large-format cinema slot in 2026 is the clearest signal yet that anime films can anchor regular IMAX programming alongside the newer-release theatrical anime that have moved through the UK over the past two years. The 1988 film's placement into that same format, four decades on from its release, is the bookend test of how well the technical restoration holds up against the contemporary projection standard.
The theatrical run begins April 17 and continues through early May. Ticket availability by cinema and screen format is listed on AKIRAFILM.CO.UK, the dedicated booking portal Anime Limited has launched for the release.
